Vax Nevada Days Report Indicates the Vaccine Incentive Program Helped Inoculate Close to Half a Million Nevadans
RENO, Nev. (Monday, December 6) – Today, Immunize Nevada, a statewide nonprofit focused on advocating for and providing access to immunizations for Nevadans, released its report detailing the health impacts of the vaccine incentive program, Vax Nevada Days, an effort led by Immunize Nevada with support from the Nevada Governor’s office. The report details that within the effort’s eight-week period, 440,988 vaccines were administered to Nevadans, following a declining rate of vaccinations experienced in the month of June.
“To protect more Nevadans from COVID-19, we needed to encourage citizens to get vaccinated from the harmful effects of the virus and Vax Nevada Days was certainly successful in this regard,” said Heidi Parker, former executive director for Immunize Nevada. “Data continues to demonstrate that COVID-19 vaccines are a critical component in keeping people safe and healthy and getting us closer to a sense of normalcy.”
The effort included eight weeks of prize drawings, beginning July 8, 2021 and concluding August 26, 2021 with the announcement of a grand prize $1 million dollar winner. Incentives included cash prizes ranging from $1,000 to $1 million and 529 plan funds (secondary education savings accounts) for post-secondary education from $5,000 to $50,000. Additionally, more than 1,000 fishing licenses and nearly 500 Nevada state park entrance permits were awarded to eligible residents. In total, 2,000 winners were randomly selected from all Nevadans who had received at least one round of a COVID-19 vaccine, no matter when their vaccine process was initiated. Amongst the winners are 19 students, 11 veteran or military service members, and 25 healthcare and essential workers. The youngest winner is 12 years old and the oldest winner is 83 years old.
Winners reflected those who had received vaccinations from as far back as December of 2020 up to August of 2021, as all Nevadans who had received COVID-19 inoculations were automatically entered to win.
Mechanics of the incentive program were managed by International Game Technology PLC (IGT), a global gaming company, which helped ensure an equitable, fully blind drawing process in collaboration with Nevada’s Immunization Information System, WebIZ. Guidance and oversight was also provided by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Vaccination data is provided by the Nevada Health Response team (coordinated through the State of Nevada and Immunize Nevada) and reflected in the Nevada Health Response Covid-19 Dashboard.
“While Immunize Nevada led the heft of this charge, we recognize an effort of this scope that helped inoculate nearly half a million Nevadans would not have been possible were it not for the collaboration and partnership with others,” said Parker. “Our heartfelt gratitude to the dozens of organizations that lent time and talent to execute such an undertaking, including government agencies, private businesses and industries, educational institutions and individuals and, of course, healthcare partners.”
