TWG 2022 SEEKS 3,300 VOLUNTEERS
Around 3,300 volunteers will be needed to make The World Games 2022 a success, according to the organisers in Birmingham, Alabama. The Birmingham Organising Committee has already received 2,000 applications since the campaign was launched on 1 November.
In the eleventh edition of The World Games from 7 to 17 July 2022, 3,600 athletes from over 100 nations will participate. Thirty-four sports are on the ten-day competition programme. This task cannot be accomplished without the commitment of the volunteers, who will be active in 15 to 20 different areas.
"This event will take a small army of people to unite and serve a common purpose," said Kathy Boswell, Executive Vice President of Community and Volunteer Engagement for TWG 2022. The Birmingham Organising Committee for The World Games 2022 expects more than 500,000 spectators to visit the city during the competitions.
"The customer service details are almost endless, and our goal is to provide an outstanding experience and memorable moments for our guests and athletes. This experience is our opportunity to celebrate the athletes' achievements and show the world the new Birmingham. As we come together and get to know one another as citizens and neighbours, the legacy of unity will carry the city forward," added Kathy Boswell.
Applicants must pass a background check and complete the interview process to qualify as a volunteer. Once selected, volunteers will begin a series of training workshops, including Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Culture and Etiquette, Disability and Inclusion, Human Trafficking, and Safety Protocols. The training starts in late March. Many of the module training units will be offered online for volunteers to complete at their own pace.
Even public figures have offered their time to serve as volunteers. Michael Saag, M.D., at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and friend of internationally renowned immunologist Anthony Fauci, has joined the volunteer programme.
"Dr. Saag is one of the most renowned infectious disease experts in Alabama," said Boswell. Seeing someone who has so much on their plate during this pandemic willing to serve as a TWG 2022 volunteer is a great example of the Birmingham leaders committed to serving.”
Volunteer registration is still open, and volunteers can register as individuals or in groups. All volunteers must serve a minimum of 20 hours. Each volunteer will receive complimentary tickets to selected events, uniforms, shift meals, and an appreciation party at the Closing Ceremony.
