The very real version of a life...
Ok, check out a few projects between Kickstarter and Indiegogo. The Old Place made the list to feature. After checking out the video and reading the entire project, made #1 for this week fast!
Have to admit it hit a personal note in a few areas. #1: Grew up in a small town where almost everyone knew you and your story. In addition to knowing where you were as a teenager (slight downside). #2: Almost everyone has gone through what the main character (Alma) has in one sense or another. Seriously read the project for why. 3: Never really fit in where I grew up and live again. Been through serious depression more than 1 time. For the most part, did not show it or tell people.
I like the way Ms. Namnoum draws from personal experience here (see "Impact" section). Plus, this film is created to make a difference and show the real version of mental illness / depression. Not the Hollywood / corporate media version of it. Hopefully, this side of will educate people and inspire them to, at least, learn more / become involved.
There is a basic budget breakdown with categories. It could go into a little more detail with at least ballpark estimates for each category.
Rewards:
The perks / rewards are a great fit for amounts. They do get creative with some unique surprises. Example: $100: Personal message written inside a seashell. The $250 level is a great match, especially with a pre-release screening with the cast and crew!
Overall recommendation:
For a non-requested project to be featured in Surreal ValeCity, it has to be something special now. "The Old Place" has that something special. Main reasons: appealing to the personal side of almost everyone. Whether it is something they are currently experiencing or memories. Even though this film is about a female teenager, at 48, it brings back memories from personal experiences. I seriously believe it could make a real difference in people's lives. "The Old Place" is definitely worth the investment. Even if you don't have a lot of money, every dollar does count an help.
