Save the Electors
We must protect the safety and the lives of the electoral college and their families.
In 2016, I helped start a nationwide movement to block the inauguration of Donald Trump through the force of the Electoral College. We persuaded seven electors to change their votes, an act that could have powerful ramifications in a race as close as the upcoming election is predicted to be. QAnon, white supremacists, and InfoWars followers who support the Trump presidency have access to the same tools, and a proven willingness to take extreme measures. I believe these radicals will intimidate the electoral college and their families.
Whether driving a car into a crowd in Charlottesville or an armed 17-year-old seeking out and shooting protestors, Trump’s supporters are willing to resort to deadly violence. With their Machiavellian support, a tight race could go from a general election loss for Trump, to an Electoral College win, subverting true democracy.
Alarms are going off for me, and should be for you.
The most controversial campaign in our history is coming to a close in just two months and there is a fair chance that the results in the Electoral College are going to be extraordinarily close. A 271 to 267 Electoral College win on November 3 could mean a race called for Biden; but, if just a small number of those electors are persuaded through threats or other measures to change their votes, an electoral vote count a month later could have a frighteningly different outcome.
If enough electors defect from Biden and change their votes to Trump, he would be named president, once again. If instead, Biden electors choose someone else and deny both candidates the 270-vote majority, the president would be chosen by the U.S. House of Representatives, with one vote per state. With a Republican majority at the delegation level, Trump would be assured victory, again. In either case, there could not be a better outcome for a reality king president during what he considers a ratings “sweeps” week.
Seven electors made the change in the 2016 election, casting their “faithless votes” for another candidate, leading to a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case. The Supreme Court ruled that states can require their electors to vote for the popular winner in their state’s presidential race. Not that they must, that they can. It is a subtle difference that could mean democratic disaster in the coming election.
This idea of bullied electors struck me recently when reading about the bi-partisan Transition Integrity Project. When a room packed full of political, military, and academic experts plays out scenario after scenario of what might happen in election results and comes to the conclusion that every follower of democracy should be worried, fear is no longer unreasonable, it is necessary for survival.
This administration has delivered one Constitutional crisis after another, making it even more likely the faith of those party-loyalists chosen as electors may well be at risk. Even more, it may not just be their faith, but jobs, reputations, and livelihoods. Are we to sit idly by as this tyrannical president, who remarked in a now infamous interview with Chris Wallace that he “will see” if he accepts election results, is given an opportunity to coerce a handful of electors to change their votes?
The abuses of power are flagrant. He continues to disregard the law, without consequence. Is there any doubt that this narcissist will take action against his political opponents without remorse? Too many notions that seemed far-fetched four years ago, now elicit justified, wide-spread axiety.
Regardless of party affiliation, voters on both sides seem to agree that the chances of a tight election are probable and Trump is unlikely to concede the office. Confronting this issue of electors who could potentially be convinced to forfeit their vote has become more urgent with the close of conventions and the nominations of party candidates for president. Party officials in each state are moving to nominate and select electors who will represent their voters, some in less than 30 days.
We must protect the safety and the lives of the electoral college and their families. I am calling on state governments to do everything in their protect the electors and their families through whatever means necessary. I hope others join me in that plea. For every American who proudly dons the “I voted” sticker on election day, know that protecting the electors means safeguarding your vote and the democracy we so revere.
