Lou Barletta Statement on Biden Border Crisis
Preliminary data reported by the Washington Post shows that the United States Customs and Border Patrol detained more than 1.7 million migrants at the southern border during the 2021 fiscal year - the highest number ever recorded in American history.
U.S. authorities detained more than 1.7 million migrants along the Mexico border during the 2021 fiscal year that ended in September, and arrests by the Border Patrol soared to the highest levels ever recorded, according to unpublished U.S. Customs and Border Protection data obtained by The Washington Post.
Illegal crossings began rising last year but skyrocketed in the months after President Biden took office. As CBP arrests increased this past spring, Biden described the rise as consistent with historical seasonal norms. But the busiest months came during the sweltering heat of July and August, when more than 200,000 migrants were taken into custody.
Former mayor and congressman Lou Barletta, Republican candidate for governor of Pennsylvania, today issued the following statement:
"President Biden has rolled out the red carpet for illegal immigrants and has endangered the lives of countless Americans in the process. While Biden's CBP nominee Chris Magnus refuses to utter the phrase 'Border Crisis,' the numbers could not be any clearer that our country is facing an illegal immigration crisis to the extent of which we have never seen before in our nation's history.
"As the first mayor in the country to pass a local ordinance dealing with illegal immigration back in 2006, I can say without hesitation that the problems at the border don't stay at the border. Just this week, a woman was raped on a SEPTA train in Philadelphia by an individual who was in the country illegally and had a long criminal record that included pleading guilty to a sexual assault charge in Washington DC in 2017.
"Right is right and wrong is wrong. Illegal is illegal. I urge President Biden to get serious about fixing this unprecedented crisis at our southern border and I call on Pennsylvania's Chief Law Enforcement Officer, Attorney General Josh Shapiro, to denounce the sanctuary cities in Pennsylvania that made it possible for the SEPTA sexual assault incident to occur."
