The Jewish Community Center of the Lehigh Valley (JCC) is ready for the summer season with the grand opening of its new outdoor swimming pool. In addition, the JCC will celebrate the complete renovation of its indoor pool which was completed earlier this year. The event is scheduled for June 13, 2021 and will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony for donors, community partners, government officials, and organizational leadership. The day’s schedule also includes community activities such as group exercise classes and a youth swim party.
These two major building projects were both impacted by Covid-19. The indoor pool repairs took advantage of downtime during a mandated closure in the winter, while the new outdoor pool was put on hold last spring due to Covid-19. Both projects are a collaboration between community stakeholders, including the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, local foundations, and individual donors.
The indoor pool project was made possible through the sale of the JCC’s former camp property in Center Valley, as well as a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, made possible with the help of State Sen. Pat Browne. The JCC’s indoor pool, which is over 60 years old, has been critical infrastructure in the City of Allentown dating back to the 1950s, and has taught thousands of children and adults how to swim.
The new outdoor pool was designed specifically with children and families in mind, with a large shallow area appropriate for instructional swim for even the youngest children. The pool was built by Monogram Custom Homes & Pools, which brought its expertise in commercial pool design and prioritized the project given that it will serve over 250 children at camp this summer.
According to Eric Lightman, the JCC’s executive director, “These pool projects represent the culmination of our efforts over the past two years to improve the facilities on our 22nd St. campus, for the benefit of our children and our community. Despite the challenges of this past year, our many community partners made it possible to complete two critical projects.”
The JCC plans to use the outdoor pool on weekdays as part of its Camp JCC summer camp program and open it on the weekends for family swim. The indoor pool is available for use for lap swimming, private lessons, swim team, and group exercise throughout the year. Both pools are made available to JCC members, and membership is open to the entire community. For more information, visit www.lvjcc.org.
