Carson City, NV – This afternoon the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services contacted the state’s Local Health Authorities and community partners to provide an update on the first allocation of COVID-19 vaccine, after receiving more information from the federal government regarding the first anticipated shipment to the State.
Throughout the month of December, the State is set to receive more than 164,000 doses which will be used to vaccinate hospital staff, skilled nursing facility staff and residents, and other Tier 1 individuals as outlined in Nevada’s COVID-19 Vaccination Program Playbook.
The State anticipates receiving 25,350 doses in the first week, with a portion of those going to the State’s pharmacy partners, CVS and Walgreens, who will vaccinate those who work and reside in skilled nursing facilities.
The rest of the doses received in the first week will not cover all the hospital staff in the State, so DHHS will provide a portion for hospital staff in every Nevada hospital.
As almost every county in the state is experiencing elevated disease transmission, ensuring the vaccination is uniformly provided to Tier 1 is a priority. This modification from the current draft of Nevada’s vaccination playbook is intended to ensure that critical infrastructure workforce in hospitals in every county receive the benefit of the vaccine as early as possible.
Based on the latest information from the federal government, the State is expecting to receive enough first doses of the vaccine in the second week’s distribution to cover the remaining critical infrastructure workforce in hospitals throughout the state.
The vaccine will be distributed after the federal review and approval process is complete, which includes vetting through advisory committees with the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
