PHOTOS: Governor Whitmer Visits M-30 Bridge in Beaverton Alongside Residents and Elected Officials
LANSING, Mich. -- Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer traveled to the M-30 bridge in Beaverton, which was recently rebuilt and reopened after it was destroyed last year by historic flooding. The governor discussed her Rebuilding Michigan plan to administer $300 million to fix 120 local bridges in serious or critical condition. The governor was joined by Speaker Jason Wentworth and local residents.
"This community has been resilient in the last year as they handled the flooding crisis on top of COVID-19, and the re-opening of the M-30 bridge is critical in ensuring local residents can return to normal,” said Governor Whitmer. "Investing in infrastructure is a priority for my administration, and I am grateful for MDOT's work in efficiently fixing the M-30 bridge."
On Tuesday, May 19, 2020 heavy rainfall in mid-Michigan led to the breach of the Edenville and Sanford Dams and destroyed the M-30 bridge in Beaverton. Governor Whitmer declared a state of emergency on May 19, 2020 for Midland City and Midland County and later expanded the declaration to include additional impacted counties of Arenac, Gladwin, Saginaw, and Iosco. On May 20, 2020 Gov. Whitmer sent a letter to President Trump urging him to approve a federal emergency declaration for Midland County, which was approved on May 21, 2020. The bridge reopened on March 18, 2021.
Governor Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan plan would provide $300 million to fix 120 bridges across the state in serious or critical condition in order to prepare against future emergencies.
