Governor Sisolak Visits Non-Profits that Received Community Recovery Grants to Serve Nevadans
CARSON CITY, NV – In April, Governor Steve Sisolak visited with five non-profits that were awarded the Community Recovery Grants. These grants support organizations that provide direct and immediate community services to Nevadans.
"I’m proud to see all the work being done across the State of Nevada to provide critical services to communities in need as we continue to recover from the pandemic. I am committed to making sure these non-profits have the support they need from the State,” said Governor Steve Sisolak. “These grants will help them continue their missions to serve even more Nevadans.”
The State set aside $30 million in federal funds for existing non-profits in the State that help provide direct and immediate community services. The Interim Finance Committee approved the first four non-profits to receive awards in February. On April 7, 2022, they awarded another five non-profits to receive the Community Recovery Grants.

Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada:

Moxy Up:
- On April 11, representatives from Moxy Up joined Governor Sisolak at the Capitol building in Carson City. Alicy Gray, who is 16-years-old and previously received services from Moxy Up, discussed her new role as a paid, student mentor because of the Community Recovery Grant.
- Moxy Up received $169,595 from the Community Recovery Grant. The grant will help expand their youth mentor program, “Mentorship through Generations.” This will help them hire more student mentors like Alicy. The grant will also allow for increased support for their tutoring program, which directly supports community-based tutoring. It will also fund Moxy Up’s “Kindness Campaign” which is a youth-led initiative where students promote SEL attributes through kindness.
- The non-profit serves middle school and high school youth in Minden who need a safe space to learn and receive mentoring in Douglas and Mineral Counties.
- On April 12, Governor Sisolak toured the Carson City Senior Center and helped as they prepared meals for seniors in need with Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels in Carson City delivers more than 100,000 meals to homebound seniors each year. The Carson City Senior Center helps prepare and deliver those meals each week, as well as provide nutritional meals to seniors at the center.
- $652,618 was awarded to the Carson City Senior Center to continue the Senior Nutrition Program while the kitchen is closed for critical repairs and Helping Hands of Vegas Valley to continue their Rural Home Delivered Meals Program.
- The organization also recently received a Capital Construction grant from the Nevada Department of Aging and Disability in the amount of $718,128.
SafeNest:
- On April 15, the Governor toured SafeNest and took part in a roundtable discussion with the staff to talk about the work being done to help domestic violence victims in Southern Nevada. The organization will use the funds to supplement their counseling services they can provide to victims of domestic and sexual assault.
- SafeNest was awarded $100,000 from the Community Recovery Grant. The funding will help them retain more licensed therapists and help fill in a gap of one-on-one counseling. Therapists will also conduct drop-in support groups to help clients engage in counseling without delay to being the healing process.
- The non-profit provides group counseling and individual therapy for adult & youth victims of domestic violence, adolescent victims of dating violence, and those who have witnessed violence.
Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada:
- On April 20, Governor Sisolak joined staff at Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and took part in a roundtable to discuss the work being done by Legal Aid Center to serve Nevadans and how the relief funding will be used.
- Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada was awarded $2.6 million as part of the Community Recovery Grant. The grant will help Legal Aid Center provide legal advocacy to address pandemic educational deficiencies for vulnerable youth with disabilities.
- The Governor also joined representatives outside to see the new home of the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center, located next to Legal Aid Center’s office.
- Governor Steve Sisolak joined volunteers at Helping Hands of Vegas Valley on April 21 to pack meals and load them into cars for the week and discuss funds the non-profit received from the Community Recovery Grant.
- Helping Hands of Vegas Valley was recently awarded $652,618 along with Carson City Senior Center for their respective nutrition programs. The grant will allow Helping Hands of Vegas Valley to continue their Rural Home Delivered Meals Program. This program is a supplemental meal delivery program that ships a 20-meal supply of semi-frozen and refrigerated meals to the doorstep of seniors in rural Nevada once a month.
