Governor Sisolak names Lisa Cano Burkhead as Lt. Governor

LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak appointed Lisa Cano Burkhead as the Lt. Governor.

“I am tremendously proud and honored to appoint Lisa as our new Lt. Governor. Her extensive experience as an educator and strong ties to the community make her an excellent choice for this position,” said Governor Sisolak. “My administration is focused on improving our education system, increasing workforce development opportunities and strengthening our economy on behalf of all Nevadans. I look forward to a close partnership with Lisa as Lt. Governor to accomplish this goal.”

The Governor introduced Cano Burkhead during a press conference in Las Vegas and during a media availability in Carson City, where Chief Justice James Hardesty performed a short swearing in ceremony.

"I want to thank Governor Sisolak for the opportunity and the honor he has given me to serve my home state of Nevada. There’s certainly a lot of work ahead of me,” Lt. Governor Cano Burkhead said. “After experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, I am dedicated to working endlessly to make our economy stronger and get our schools and families back on track.”

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Cano Burkhead, 50, is a first-generation American Latina who has spent her life educating Nevada’s students. Her father worked his way up through Las Vegas casinos, starting as a porter and later becoming a blackjack dealer. Her mom started at Hudson cleaners before becoming a seamstress at the Las Vegas Hilton where she worked on a variety of shows.

After graduating from the University of Redlands, with a double major in English and Spanish and her teaching credential, Cano Burkhead returned to Nevada to teach. She spent a decade teaching English and Spanish in Clark County schools before becoming the Dean of Students and Assistant Principal at Eldorado High School. Always focused on how to bring out the best in her students, Cano Burkhead worked with students and parents in-and-out of the classroom to develop leadership skills, enroll in AP and enrichment classes and prepare them for the real world so that they would be ready to get good jobs or start their own businesses.

In 2021, after 25 years as an educator, she retired from the Clark County School District but that hasn’t stopped her from serving the community and making education a foundational element in children’s lives. She currently teaches educators on how to better connect with students and build classrooms that fosters learning and, as Lt. Governor, will serve as a public advocate for education.

Cano Burkhead and her husband Jeffrey live in Henderson, and she serves her most important role as mother to three daughters, Taylor, Raquel and Sofia.
