Gov. Gary R. Herbert has appointed Rita Cornish and Ronald Russell
SALT LAKE CITY (Nov. 30, 2020) – Gov. Gary R. Herbert has appointed Rita Cornish and Ronald Russell to fill current vacancies on the Second District Court bench.
“It is a privilege for me to appoint someone so capable as Rita Cornish to the court bench,” Gov. Herbert said. “Rita’s experience and knowledge in the judicial system will be tremendous assets to the second district. I am confident she will excel in this new role.”
Cornish currently serves as vice president of Parr Brown Gee & Loveless, where she specializes in commercial litigation. She holds a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Utah. She received her J.D. from the S.J Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah.
“I am humbled by the honor of being appointed to the Second District Court by Gov. Herbert and by the trust and confidence he has shown in me,” said Rita Cornish. “I am mindful of the serious duties and responsibilities of this position and, if confirmed, will work diligently to apply the law impartially, fairly and faithfully.”
Ronald Russell has served as an attorney for Parr Brown Gee & Loveless for more than 35 years. In 2009 he served as the firm’s president. During his career, Russell also served as the Centerville City Mayor and was a member of the Utah Judicial Conduct Commission. Russell received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Weber State University and his J.D. from the University of Utah.

“Ronald Russell has demonstrated dedication to the law, and serving his fellowmen,” Gov. Herbert said. “I have full confidence in his abilities, and in his commitment to executing the law with fairness.”
“I am truly humbled to have received this appointment,” Russell said. “I’m grateful to Gov. Herbert for placing his trust and confidence in me and I commit to serving the community with integrity.”
The governor’s nominations are subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.
