Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of former Florida House Speaker Thomas Terrell Sessums

On Saturday, June 6, 2020, former Florida House Speaker Thomas Terrell Sessums passed away. He represented Hillsborough County in the Florida House of Representatives from 1963 until 1974, serving as Speaker of the House from 1972 until 1974. Sessums served as chair of the Florida Board of Regents and was influential in passing legislation creating the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority, the Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission, and the Tampa Sports Authority. He was also a second lieutenant for the United States Air Force completing tours of duty in Europe and Africa. The T. Terrell Sessums Elementary School was named in his honor.

To honor the memory of Thomas Terrell Sessums and his service to our state, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the Hillsborough County Courthouse in Tampa, Florida, the City Hall of Tampa, Florida, and at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, June 11, 2020.
