ATHLETES OF DAY 8: EMMA HUNT (USA) AND TIM ROBERTSON (NZL)
Congratulations to our Athletes of the Day for Friday, 15 July, at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama. On the eighth day of competition of the eleventh edition of the Games, Sport Climber Emma Hunt (USA) and orienteer Tim Robertson (NLZ) were celebrated on stage at The World Games Plaza. They were both presented with a certificate and a gift, supplied by Protective Life.
The American Spiderwoman: Emma Hunt
The home favourite bags the gold medal in Birmingham. At Sloss Furnaces Emma Hunt from the USA made use of her “home wall advantage”. The spectators on the sold out stands were roaring her on as she took on Poland's Natalia Kałucka in the speed climbing final. She hit the pad after climbing 15 vertical metres in a time of 7.24s to Kałucka's 8.88s. Hunt beamed on realising she'd just won her first Sport Climbing gold in front of a home crowd.
First time in USA – first time Gold: Tim Robertson
Tim Robertson was the Junior World Orienteering Champion in 2014 and 2015. As a senior he hadn’t won a title so far. Until now. The 26-year-old athlete from New Zealand became The World Games Champion in Men’s Sprint at the Birmingham Southern College. He was one of the first orienteers who qualified for The World Games 2022. Looking forward to his competition he said: “I'm very excited about The World Games in Birmingham! It will be my first time in America, so it's hard to know exactly what to expect from the competitions.” Whatever his expectations were, the gold medal exceeded it by far.
