The State of America’s Families – American Families Undermined by President Joe Biden
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The 2022 State of the Union Address will be delivered tomorrow by President Biden. Today, the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) analyzes the effects of the current administration’s policies on American families and values.
“The Biden Administration’s policies have threatened the prosperity of American families, resulting in historic rises in the cost of gas, food, and the most basic necessities,” said Jack Brewer, AFPI Chair of the Center for Opportunity Now. “This is coupled with a blatant disregard for our God-given freedoms through radical mandates and a refusal to stand up for equal treatment of our faith-based institutions. This marks an unprecedented time for citizens of all demographics to stand up as one unified America to defend the shared spirit of liberty that founded our great Nation. American families must come first because a strong country depends on strong families.”
Big government undermines strong family units, which are the bedrock of America, by leaving entire communities mired in vicious cycles of poverty perpetuated by outdated and counterproductive government programs. For example, along with plummeting marriage rates, the United States sadly has the highest rate of children living in single-parent households of any nation in the world. With 23% of children living with one parent and no other adults, the United States now has more than three times the world average of 7% of children raised by one parent, according to AFPI’s Fatherhood Initiative.
In an America that prizes equal opportunity, zip codes and family income should not determine a child’s future. Based on well-established research, expanding the reach and scale of parental school choice across the Nation can reduce opportunity gaps for vulnerable students and improve the quality of education for children of all backgrounds. Charter schools, private schools, tax-credit scholarships, education savings accounts, voucher programs, open enrollment, magnet schools, and many other school options are helping to redesign public education by placing parents at the forefront of the decision-making process. Scaling up choice in education across the Nation can increase competition among providers, reduce opportunity gaps for our more vulnerable students, and improve the quality of education for all children.
Parental school choice results in many benefits for both individuals and society, including higher future earnings and lower crime rates. The full promise of education choice, however, comes about from its ability to draw the best out of schools of all stripes—public or private—by empowering parents liberated from local education monopolies to demand greater accountability and responsiveness.
“Parental involvement in the classroom through school choice programs and curriculum transparency initiatives is America’s ticket to educational success,” said Scott Turner, Chair of AFPI’s Center for Education Opportunity. “That educational success results in economic uplift, social wellness, unity, and safety for all of our students.”
One of the founding pillars of AFPI is putting the nuclear American family first. AFPI’s leaders and the American people know the policies of the Trump Administration supported the growth and prosperity of American families through upholding God-given liberties, spurring record job growth, safeguarding life, and restoring hope in our faith-based institutions.
