Western Lehigh Chamber of Commerce to Award Three $1000 Grants to Local Non-Profits
Event Information:
While Covid may have had a lot of financial impacts this year in terms of grants, donations, scholarships, and more, the Western Lehigh Chamber felt now more than ever a call to give grants to local non-profits. Each year The Western Lehigh Chamber of Commerce awards two $1000 Community Grants, in memory of Sophie Gerhard and Edwin Adamczak, to two non-profit organizations. This year they will be giving out three $1000 grants. The three recipients are the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund, Fogelsville Fire Company, and Parkland CARES Food Pantry.
On Tuesday October 13, the Western Lehigh board will be presenting the recipients with their checks and photo opportunities with the boards and volunteers. At noon the board will be meeting up at Fogelsville Fire Company (7850 Lime St Fogelsville PA 18051) with Fogelsville Fire Company and Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund and then the group will go to Parkland CARES Food Pantry at 12:45pm for their check presentation.
Learn about the recipients below!
Since the untimely death of twenty-two-year-old Krysta Hankee in 2007, the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund has worked tirelessly to continue Krysta’s caring nature throughout the Lehigh Valley and beyond. Our “Miles that Matter” initiative raises money to provide fuel for families traveling to address critical needs. Many of the families we have helped live in the very areas your organization serves. We have provided over 2 million miles of travel. Examples would be the Stokes family seeking help for their young son, Makala Ashmar who is fighting cancer and Abigail Graham, a Parkland teen who suffered a stroke last year. LVHN uses our gas gift cards to service patients treated through their Oncology, Transplant, Burn Center, Veterans Services and Children’s Hospital. We partner with Giant Foods through their “Cash for Causes” program and purchase Giant gift cards at a five percent discount and provide them to families who purchase fuel to travel. We calculate the number of miles each gift card would provide to the family but let them know they may purchase food or fuel. We will add value to our partnership by matching your grant and directing $2,000.00 in Giant gift cards to families living in your region.
The Fogelsville Fire Company will use the grant money for a Seek Thermal Imaging Camera. The camera would not only help them locate hidden fires but also locate victims in a fire scenario. They are one of three stations in the township. They answer 450-500 calls a year and have a large bedroom community.
Covid-19 turned what was once a Choice Food Pantry into a drive thru Pantry overnight. Families went from choosing items from the Pantry shelves that best suited their needs to patiently waiting hours in line for food. In a matter of months, Parkland C.A.R.E.S. went from serving roughly 40 families at an opening to over 150 families, and at its peak, served 202 families in just an hour and fifteen minutes.
To return to a choice model while adhering to the parameters set forth for social distancing, Parkland C.A.R.E.S. is developing an online ordering system that returns the control of shopping to our families. The system will allow families to see the Pantry’s inventory and once again, make choices based on their needs. Families can access the system by visiting the Pantry's inventory through a mobile app or home computer. Once an order has been placed, volunteers will shop the order from the Pantry shelves and bag the groceries. Families will then visit the Pantry to receive their food in a contactless manner.
A $1,000.00 grant from WLCC would assist Parkland C.A.R.E.S. in securing the necessary software, iPads, and equipment to implement its new online ordering system.
