VR for Change Alcove Challenge Awards $10K Prize to
Labyrinth Lunacy VR
NEW YORK (June 16, 2020) – Today, Games for Change awarded the $10,000 grand prize of the VR for Change Alcove Challenge, sponsored by AARP Innovation Labs to Labyrinth Lunacy VR. Based on Alcove, a VR platform created by AARP Innovation Labs, the Challenge inspired developers to create virtual reality experiences that focus on trying to enhance quality of life, create new memories, and deepen intergenerational bonds with loved ones – particularly older adults who are at higher risk of loneliness and social isolation.
The Challenge finalists presented their immersive experiences during a panel at the Games for Change Festival, where Labyrinth Lunacy was crowned the winner.
“The finalists have delivered exceptional experiences that transcend a conventional game to playfully connect us to the people we hold most dear,” said Susanna Pollack, president of Games for Change. “These games are now more important than ever as people look for inventive ways to share experiences and make memories with friends and family -- as well as combat social isolation and increase wellbeing.”
“We’re thrilled with the creative experiences the Challenge finalists have designed and the potential they have to help family members of all ages stay connected through VR,” said Cezara Windrem, Innovation Catalyst at AARP Innovation Labs, and creator and producer of Alcove. “We look forward to extending the opportunity for these developers to publish their experiences on the Alcove platform.”
Each of the five Challenge finalists center around a theme or experience that promotes healthy aging and/or intergenerational connection. Following is more information on the Challenge winner and finalists.
