Completely honest, I did not know what to think based on first impression. I thought is was something simple or possibly satirical. Seriously, how could being refused a haircut based on nationality have so much of an impact on a person. I was completely and dead wrong!!!!!
Pirooz Kalayeh was refused a haircut due to being Iranian when he was a child. As adults, we often think only major events (divorce, death, bullying) could traumatize a child. We forget, no matter the age, sometimes a simple event can cause serious psychological damage.
Mr. Kalayeh takes what appears to be a small event and expands / evolves it to the true meaning. Forces us to look at society, people and ourselves. How discrimination based on any number of aspects does exist in our society / world. How sometimes we may discriminate without even realizing it. On the flip side, almost everyone has faced discrimination / prejudice for any of a large number of reasons.
The film also points out something seriously overlooked in our country. Tensions between the U.S. and Iran fluctuate and are, at times, high. Immigrants from Iran live in this country. They do face discrimination, prejudice and possible hate.
Mr. Kalayeh knows his target audience / demographic. He also has hopes of reaching everyone. Making us look at our lives and past to see both sides. This may be blind hope, his film will attempt to unite us as humans. Regardless of DNA, differences or personal preferences / beliefs.
