Senate Confirms Governor’s Appointments to New Higher Education Governance Board
SALT LAKE CITY (May 18, 2020) - The Utah Senate has confirmed Governor Herbert’s appointments to the newly-formed Utah Board of Higher Education. This restructured governance of higher education, outlined in SB111, Higher Education Amendments, combines the Utah System of Higher Education and the Utah System of Technical Colleges to create a unified system with one board, the Utah Board of Higher Education, to better support students with higher education accessibility, affordability and accelerate graduation rates. This new governance structure takes effect on July 1, 2020. The Governor anticipates swearing in these members during their inaugural meeting on July 10, 2020.

The unified Utah System of Higher Education will be made up of 16 public institutions, including eight technical colleges, two community colleges, four regional universities and two research universities.
The new Utah Board of Higher Education will focus on setting top priorities in the areas of workforce, affordability, access, completion, transfer, rural development and educational strategies, and more. Along with that, the new Board will be setting a statewide vision and developing a strategic plan with goals and performance metrics; establishing the institutions’ missions and roles; and delegating the appropriate responsibilities and authorities to each institutions’ board of trustees and presidents to ensure the system is efficient, effective and delivers world-class instruction and research.
