An event the Lehigh Valley desperately needs
With the Lehigh Valley PA area having what I call "broken record syndrome", SaikouCon is something desperately needed here. The variety of vendors, Cosplay, panels / discussions, films, etc. make SaikouCon a very welcome break from the usual festivals / fairs and constant repetition of the area, especially in Summer. Another aspect I loved: the event is extremely family friendly. At night, they cater to the 18+ crowd (dating game, films, etc.). Trying to provide something everyone will love without downgrading into unorganized chaos is definitely a much loved benefit.
Arriving around 3 p.m. on opening day, I had a great chance to get a good feel for the event. There is one panel I really want to point out. The main one that caught my attention and only one I had a chance to attend: Get to Know your favorite Cosplayers: Foxxy, Coralene & Dolly.
Knowing very little about Cosplay, this panel and discussion was very educational. After introductions, the ladies opened it up to questions. The topics ranged from their history with Cosplay to favorite characters and more. This being a serious learning experience, I did ask a few. The interaction between the ladies and attendees was definitely on a more casual, friendly level than straight Q&A.
I know this was only a small sample of the various panels / discussions throughout the 3 days.
My only concern? As SaikouCon continues to grow, the venues available continue to shrink in the area. The Lehigh Valley, in general, has a shrinking variety of venues that do not charge large amounts of money to rent and use. After 6 years, SaikouCon definitely has a growing and evolving future. Will that long term future include the Lehigh Valley?
Wrapping this up, SaikouCon is a lot more than a convention. It is very educational on various aspects of Anime / Cosplay and other topics. It combines a great combination of events and vendors. The event makes every attempt to have something for everyone, including first time attendees. In an area with constant repetition, SaikouCon provides a much needed different / unique experience.
