Governor Vázquez Garced composes medical task force that will be part of the government 'task force' to deal with COVID-19 coronavirus situation
(March 19, 2020 - La Fortaleza, San Juan) – Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced today announced the integration of a working group of health professionals that joins in reinforcing the "task force" created to address the situation of coVID-19 coronavirus on the island.
"Following the increase in cases around the world of this virus, we have taken several steps to work on the different situations that are happening. First we look for ways to prevent the arrival of people infected by stopping the entry of cruise ships to our ports, and by placing security stations by the National Guard at airports to verify all arriving passengers. We also imposed a curfew and 'lock down' to prevent community contagion and to be able to control the spread of the virus. Now, having six positive cases to COVID-19, we have integrated into the 'task force' a team of experts in the field of health, who will work hand in hand with the government," the first executive said.
The task force will be led by the rector of the RCM, Dr. Segundo Rodríguez Quilichini, who will serve as General Coordinator of the efforts of the working group.
They are part of the group: Dr. Pablo Rodríguez, director of the Trauma Room of the Medical Center, who is in charge of the coupling of all the medical-professional resources that are necessary to attend this emergency; Dr. Dharma Vazquez, dean of the RCM Graduate School of Public Health; Dr. Guillermo Vázquez, Director of the Department of Infectious Microbiology at RCM; Dr. Jorge Santana Bagur, acting infectologist at RCM; Dr. Karen Martínez, Director of Psychiatry at RCM; Dr. Cynthia Pérez, graduate school of public health; Dr. José Camuñas, Director of the Department of Family Medicine, Coordinator and Director of the Telemedicine Program of the RCM; Atty. Jorge Matta, CEO of ASEM; Ing. Wilfredo Martínez, de ASEM; and Betsy Rosado, Director of Institutional Security at ASEM.
"I thank this group of professionals for being willing to work with the government and all citizens to be safe and healthy, which is the priority right now. We must all work together to combat this virus and prevent its spread in Puerto Rico," said Vázquez Garced.
"As the main university training center for the island's future generation of health professionals, we are committed to serving citizens and directing efforts to address this emergency situation and to collaborate, hand-in-hand with the Secretary of Health and with the governor of Puerto Rico. This task force brings together a group of experts in the fields of microbiology, infectology, psychiatry, public health and trauma. The 'expertise', commitment and interdisciplinary rapprochement of this group of experts gives the country certainty that this emergency is taken care of comprehensively, and that the determinations and actions to be followed are aligned with the most up-to-date scientific data COVID-19. We will be able to deal with this new crisis that threatens our health and daily living. I urge all health professionals to work together in Puerto Rico. I have no doubt that it will," Rodriguez Quilichini said.
Regarding testing to diagnose COVID-19 coronavirus, the governor reported that the government issued a purchase order to Quest Laboratories to increase the supply of the molecular biology test.
"Today, we have 1,000 reagents, which are working with the Department of Health's Public Health Laboratory. And a purchase order was given to Quest Labs to increase the ability to have available testing. They will be sent to the laboratory of that company for processing. The results will be available for three to six days," the governor said.
"These tests will be provided to people who have symptomatology. In this case, you go to the doctor and if he determines that he deserves to take the test, it will be done," stressed Vázquez Garced, who clarified that epidemiologists do not give authorization, but they should be informed to keep a record.
In addition to appointing this group and working with greater access to the tests, the governor advanced that work is being done with the Ramón Ruiz Arnao University Hospital (HURRA), better known as the Bayamón Regional Hospital, as the first hospital hospital to will serve as the basis for dealing with critical cases of CORONAvirus COVID-19. The hospital already has 20 rooms equipped and prepared to receive patients. The operation will be supported by the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the regional hospitals that the Department of Health has.
Similarly, 120 additional fans have already been ordered to be purchased to supply the other hospitals in the state, as well as all resources, including masks, gloves and other sanitary materials to protect against the virus.
