No House representation for Alaska until August & it’s Murkowski’s fault
Following the death of Rep. Don Young, Alaska will have no member of the U.S. House of Representatives until at least mid-August, according to two different analyses. The five-month gap is due to Ballot Measure 2, which mandates an open, all-party primary to select the top four candidates to advance to a general election. In that general election, voters will rank the four candidates and a winner will be declared following a complicated process that reallocates the votes for candidates who are eliminated during the tabulation.
Because of statutory timelines laid out, and time needed for printing ballots and distributing ballots overseas, the earliest likely date that Alaska will have a newly elected member of the House falls somewhere in mid- to late-August.
Ballot Measure 2, which narrowly passed in 2020, is widely accepted to have been put in place to protect incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who would been unable to prevail in a straight Republican primary election in 2022. Ballot Measure 2 was drafted and championed by political operative Scott Kendall, who previously served as counsel to Murkowski’s write-in campaign in 2010. He subsequently served as campaign coordinator for Murkowski’s most recent re-election campaign in 2016.
Alaska Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kelly Tshibaka today issued the following statement:
“Once again, Lisa Murkowski’s concern for herself is costing Alaska dearly. We lost a giant with the passing of Don Young, and now it will be five long months before we have the opportunity to put anyone in that seat to help defend Alaska against the disastrous Biden administration. Murkowski’s political team wrote and promoted Ballot Measure 2, which is now wreaking havoc on Alaska’s citizens the very first time it comes into play.
“Every step of the way, Lisa Murkowski’s actions have been all about what’s good for her and not what’s best for Alaska. She was gifted her Senate seat by her father, who appointed her to his unexpired term when he became governor. To maintain her popularity with her D.C. insider friends, she has opposed solid, constitutionalist judges and approved of radical nominees who have ruled against Alaska’s interests. And she cast vote after vote to confirm over 90 percent of Biden’s high-level nominees, who are targeting our state, killing our energy jobs, and ruining our economy. To top it all off, Murkowski’s team engineered Ballot Measure 2, hijacking our election processes for the sole purpose of protecting her inherited Senate seat.
“For the next five months, we will have no member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Sadly, Alaska is used to the lower 48 passing us over and taking our voice away, but this time, our own U.S. senator did it.”
