In Case You Missed It: Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak speaks at 2021 Nevada Housing Conference
LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak helped open the 2021 Nevada Housing Conference, laying out what the State has done so far to create more affordable housing and laying out plans for future investments.
“Housing is a complex issue – it's not a problem that can or will solely be solved by the government. It’s also not a problem that can or will be solely solved by private entities,” Governor Sisolak said. “Like so many of the other obstacles and challenges we face, we have all got to work together – as the Battle-Born Nevadans we are – to come up with solutions to help our families, our children, our communities, our economy and our State thrive. Together, we can transform the affordable housing challenges in our State.”
Since coming into office, the State has approved more than 2,300 new affordable apartment units and helped preserve more than 3,000 affordable apartment units. More than $230 million in single-family bond financing has been approved for homeownership opportunities for low and moderate-income borrowers. The Governor signed Senate Bill 284, which modified the State Affordable Housing Tax Credits.
During the pandemic, the Governor issued a statewide eviction moratorium to ensure Nevadans did not lose their access to housing during the darkest days of the pandemic. The State immediately committed $30 million in coronavirus relief funds for emergency rental assistance programs.
The State is still working with partners to distribute rental assistance money and Governor Sisolak signed Assembly Bill 486 into law this session, which helps ensure that Nevadans who have applied and are waiting for their rental assistance aren’t evicted and it set aside additional funding to help landlords recoup money they lost during the pandemic.
The Governor just wrapped a 75-day listening tour on how to best utilize American Rescue Plan funds, and housing was listed as a top priority.
