Mobile Vaccination Units wrap up rural tour
Carson City, NV — On May 23 the Mobile Vaccination Units (MVU) that began working in Nevada in early April completed their vaccination tour of the state, administering nearly 7,600 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
Over 7 weeks, the MVUs made 63 stops in 28 towns, including seven stops at correctional facilities, and two school-focused stops, to increase vaccine access for Nevada’s rural, frontier and tribal communities.
"I am incredibly proud of the work that was done to coordinate the MVU clinics in Nevada. These clinics would not have been successful without the strong partnerships and collaborations of health care providers, community and emergency services, and volunteers across Nevada,” said Governor Steve Sisolak. “As a result of these efforts, more Nevadans are now protected from COVID-19 and on behalf of the more than 3 million people who call Nevada home, I want to thank everyone involved in making this a success.”
The MVUs began their tour using the 1-shot Janssen vaccine and transitioned to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine during the federal pause. Following the updated guidance for the Janssen vaccine, the MVUs continued with both vaccine options, allowing Nevadans 16 and older to be vaccinated during the tour.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is now authorized for those 12 years and older.
The goal of the MVU was to bring vaccine to communities that may not have had an easily accessible opportunity for vaccination.
The MVUs operated on a walk-in basis in rural communities throughout Nevada and made two visits to each location to account for the 2-dose Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sent the two MVUs to the state on April 5 to support equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccine to vulnerable populations in rural and tribal areas where limited medical infrastructure exists. The units were a collaborative effort staffed by registered nurses, vaccinators and vaccination preparers, pharmacy technicians, as well as registration, screening personnel and security from local communities.
