LANSING, Mich. – This week, in recognition of Student Appreciation Week, Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist visited Sexton High School in Lansing and Paul Robeson Malcom X Academy in Detroit. On Monday, Governor Whitmer declared this week, April 25 to May 1, as Student Appreciation Week to celebrate the Michigan’s bright and hardworking students. Lt. Governor Gilchrist spoke with students, teachers, and parents about the needed investments in education.
“I had a great time visiting Sexton High School in Lansing and Paul Robeson Malcom X Academy in Detroit this week and learning about the impact our administration’s investments have had for parents, educators, and students,” said Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II. “As a parent with kids in public school, I know how critical it is to partner with parents, get kids the resources they need to succeed, and attract and retain the best educators. Governor Whitmer and I are committed to getting things done that position young people in Michigan for success.”
In her Fiscal Year 2023 budget proposal, Governor Gretchen Whitmer proposed major investments in education, including increasing base per-pupil finding from $8,700 to $9,135, investing $1 billion for infrastructure improvements to help make schools safer, and $1.6 billion for educator retention programs that make sure our educators have the supports they need. Governor Whitmer’s budget proposal makes the largest increase in education funding in 20 years, without raising taxes.
Last year Governor Whitmer signed the School Aid budget into law which eliminated the funding gap between school districts. Since taking office, the Whitmer-Gilchrist Administration has tripled the number of literacy coaches in Michigan.
