Comes to Rotary to discuss his time working for the White House
(Allentown, PA)—Joseph Petro will speak to the Allentown Rotary Club on Friday, February 21, 2020 at noon at Bell Hall Restaurant about his experiences serving for 23 years as a special agent and executive with the U.S. Secret Service. Joe will provide a unique perspective on the inner workings of the White House and the delicate relationships that exist there among the Secret Service the rest of the White House personnel. He will describe the complex challenges associated with protecting the President outside the White House and will offer a number of entertaining stories highlighting his experiences during his tenure with the Secret Service.
Joe grew up in Allentown, PA and graduated from William Allen High School in 1962. He then attended Temple University, where he earned his B.S. in 1966. In 1980 he attended Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Prior to his career in the Secret Service, Joe was an officer in the U.S. Navy where he served in the River Patrol Forces and commanded River Patrol Boats (PBRs) in Vietnam. Near the end of his combat tour, he served as the Senior Naval Advisor to a Vietnamese PBR River Division. He was awarded a Bronze Star with Combat “V” and the Navy/Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon.
From 1971 to 1993, Joe was a special agent and senior executive with the United States Secret Service where he served in numerous operational and management positions. Joe spent 11 years assigned to various positions at the White House. Earlier in his career, he had been assigned to investigations, intelligence, training, internal and public affairs. Joe also served as Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury where he assisted departmental officials on financial crime enforcement policy and worked with the Justice Department, Congressional committees and other federal agencies on law enforcement issues.
Joseph was a Managing Director and Chief Security Officer at Citigroup, Inc. from 1993 to 2013 and a Senior Vice President and Chief Security Officer for Time Warner Inc. from 2014 until his retirement in 2018. In these roles, he had responsibility for strategy development and management of physical security, crisis management, business continuity, fraud prevention, investigation and executive protection for each company’s worldwide operations.
Joe is the former President of the Board of Directors for the International Security Management Association (ISMA). He also served as the Private Sector Chairman of the US State Department’s Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Domestic Security Alliance Council (DSAC). Joe also served for over 20 years as Vice-Chairman and member of the Board of Directors of the New York City Law Enforcement Explorers Council.
