In 2022, Gov. Whitmer is making the largest investment in state roads and bridges in Michigan’s history
LANSING, Mich. -- Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that major road repair projects, lane closures and road detours are expected to begin next week across the state. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects include I-94 ramp work in Jackson, US-41/M-28 resurfacing project in Baraga County, the I-496 Rebuilding Michigan project in Ingham County, M-46 resurfacing in Sanilac County, M-140 bridge repairs in Watervliet in Berrien County, bridge rebuilding in Mackinaw City in Emmet and Cheboygan counties and rebuilding 15 Mile Road bridge over I-94 in Calhoun County. These investments are expected to support over 5,427 jobs.
“Across Michigan, we are fixing the damn roads to save motorists time and money. Investments like these in Baraga, Berrien, Calhoun, Cheboygan, Eaton, Emmet, Gogebic, Houghton, Ingham, Jackson, and Sanilac counties will support over 5,427 jobs and help drivers go to work, drop their kids off at school, and run errands safely,” said Governor Whitmer. “Since I took office through the end of 2022, we will have invested 70% more in our roads than the previous four years to fix over 16,000 lane miles of road and 1,200 bridges, supporting nearly 89,000 jobs. Both the Rebuilding Michigan Plan and the bipartisan Building Michigan Together Plan are helping us build safe, reliable infrastructure that will make a huge difference for families and business across the state. I’m proud of what we have accomplished – let’s keep moving dirt and getting it done."
Rebuilding 15 Mile Road bridge over I-94
MDOT will rebuild the 15 Mile Road bridge over I-94 as part of the ongoing $210 million investment to rebuild I-69 between Island Highway in Charlotte, Eaton County, and I-94 in Marshall, Calhoun County. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support nearly 2,667 jobs.

Work will begin on MDOT’s $80 million investment to rebuild 2 miles of I-496 in Ingham County starting Thursday, June 2. Both directions of I-496 traffic will be detoured between Lansing Road and the Grand River during this work. Activity will include rebuilding the freeway and interchange ramps, including operational improvements from the Lansing Road and M-99 (Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard) interchanges, preventive maintenance on 17 bridges, and upgrades to the service drives from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the east. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support 1,016 jobs.

Southbound I-75 exit ramp to US-23 in Mackinaw City to close for bridge rebuilding
The southbound I-75 exit ramp to US-23 (Exit 338) in Mackinaw City will be closed starting May 31 as contractors begin removing and replacing the ramp’s bridge beams and deck, part of a larger project this season to rebuild and repave sections of the highway. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support 155 jobs.
MDOT is investing $12.3 million to rebuild and resurface US-23 from I-75 to east of South Huron Avenue and I-75 from Old M-108 (Exit 337 - Nicolet Street/Mackinaw Highway) to the Mackinac Bridge, as well as replace the southbound US-23 exit ramp bridge beams and deck over I-75. Much of the I-75 road work will require shoulder or single-lane closures with traffic shifts. Details on the project are available on the project website.
US-2 Bessemer rebuilding project resumes
MDOT, in partnership with the city of Bessemer, is investing about $9.9 million to rebuild 2.7 miles of US-2 from Powdermill Creek to east of Cedar Avenue through the city of Bessemer. The work will include reconfiguring lanes to add a center left-turn lane, storm sewer improvements, and city sanitary sewer and water main replacements. This project includes a five-year materials and workmanship pavement warranty. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 126 jobs

The project includes asphalt resurfacing, crushing and shaping of shoulders, drainage improvements, guardrail, new signs, and pavement markings. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support 55 jobs

Recently, Governor Whitmer signed the Building Michigan Together Plan, a bipartisan plan to invest nearly $5 billion in Michigan’s infrastructure, grow the economy, create jobs, and benefit families in every region of the state.
