Governor Whitmer Lowers Flags in Honor of Fallen Firefighters Across the Nation

Picture
LANSING, Mich. – Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and upon all public buildings and grounds across the state of Michigan to be lowered to half-staff today, Sunday, October 4, 2020 in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.

“On this day, we remember the firefighters across Michigan and our country who have lost their lives protecting our communities,” said Governor Whitmer. “I want to thank our firefighters for their unwavering bravery and service to our state. Today, we honor those whose lives were lost and acknowledge those courageous men and women who answered the call to protect our families.”

Governor Whitmer proclaimed October as Fire Prevention Month in an effort to help spread awareness about fire safety, protect Michigan residents, and save lives. Throughout the month the governor encourages Michiganders to participate in this observance and bring awareness to fire prevention. Over the past few months, dedicated firefighters have risked their lives to protect countless Americans from devastating wildfires across the country as a result of climate change.

To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.

Flags should be returned to full-staff on Monday, October 5, 2020.
