Governor Whitmer Makes Appointments to Boards and Commissions
LANSING, Mich. -- Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the following appointments to the Michigan Apple Committee, Governor’s Educator Advisory Council, and the State Officers' Compensation Commission.
Michigan Apple Committee
Christopher J. Alpers, of Lake Leelanau, is the vice president of operations for Redpath Orchards. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Northern Michigan University. Mr. Alpers is appointed to represent District 4 growers for a term commencing May 5, 2021 and expiring April 1, 2024. He succeeds Robert Gregory whose term expired April 1, 2021.
Philip Schwallier, of Sparta, is the owner of Schwallier’s Country Basket and a recently retired district horticulture and marketing agent at Michigan State University. He holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Michigan State University. Mr. Schwallier is appointed to represent District 2 growers for a term commencing May 5, 2021 and expiring April 1, 2024. He succeeds Mark Youngquist whose term expired April 1, 2021.
The Michigan Apple Committee is dedicated to improving the profitability of Michigan's fresh and processed apple industries. The Committee coordinates market development, educational activities, and research that benefits the 1000 family apple growers in Michigan through improved profitability, ensuring the continued success of this sector of Michigan agriculture.

Governor’s Educator Advisory Council
Cathy Longstreet, of Hastings, is a counselor with Hastings High School, chair of the K-12 Counseling Department, and an instructor at Michigan College Access Network’s school counselor post-secondary planning course. She earned her Master in Counselor Education from Western Michigan University, Master in the Art of Teaching from Aquinas College, and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Alma College. Mrs. Longstreet is reappointed to represent counselors for a term commencing May 10, 2021 and expiring May 9, 2025.
Glenn Martin, Sr., of Farmington, is the director of upward bound programs at Mott Community College. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Writing and a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Washington. Mr. Martin is appointed to represent specialists for a term commencing May 10, 2021 and expiring May 9, 2025. He succeeds Anthony Greenburg whose term expires May 9, 2021.
Benedict L. Pineda, of Lansing, is a middle school social studies, life skills, drama, and speech teacher with Haslett Public Schools, and a former adult education teacher with Holt Public Schools. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Social Science Teaching and English from Michigan State University. Mr. Pineda is reappointed to represent teachers for a term commencing May 10, 2021 and expiring May 9, 2025.
Angela J. Pérez, of Muskegon, is an elementary Spanish two-way immersion teacher with Muskegon Public Schools. She earned her Master of Arts in Teaching from Aquinas College and Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Grand Valley State University. Mrs. Pérez is designated to succeed Greg Talberg as Chair for a term commencing May 24, 2021 and expiring May 9, 2024.
The Governor’s Educator Advisory Council was created by Governor Whitmer’s Executive Order No. 2019-9. The Council will review and make recommendations regarding legislation relevant to this state’s public education system, identify and analyze issues impacting the effectiveness of Michigan’s public education system, identify best practices in public education and recommend corresponding changes and improvements to Michigan’s public education system, and provide other information or advice relevant to public education.

State Officers' Compensation Commission
Paula K. Zelenko, of Burton, is currently retired and most recently served as the mayor of the City of Burton. She previously served as a state representative for the 50th House District and a member of the Burton City Council. Ms. Zelenko is appointed for a term commencing May 5, 2021 and expiring January 1, 2025. She succeeds Sheryl Y. Kennedy who has resigned.
The State Officers’ Compensation Commission shall determine the salaries and expense allowances of the members of the Legislature, the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, the Attorney General, the Secretary of State, and the Justices of the Supreme Court.
This appointment is not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
