Governor Updates Executive Order Declaring a State of Emergency due to Civil Unrest

Picture
SALT LAKE CITY (July 10, 2020) - Yesterday, Gov. Hebert issued an executive order declaring a state emergency and closing the Utah State Capitol complex due to civil unrest caused by protests in Salt Lake City. This was in response to the decision of the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office that the police-involved shooting of Bernardo Palacios-Carbajal on May 23, 2020, was justified under Utah law. Some protesters became violent, causing bodily injury and damage to public property.

Because much of the violence occurred at or near the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office building, and because a threat of future bodily injury and destruction of private and public property exists, the executive order has been updated to also close the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office building and grounds. This was at the request of Salt Lake County District Attorney, Sim Gills.

The order remains in effect until July 13 at 11:59 p.m.
