Governor Sisolak, FEMA and the Division of Emergency Management wrap up Get Out the Vaccine Efforts in Southern Nevada
LAS VEGAS, NV - Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak was joined today Dave Fogerson, Nevada’s Emergency Manager and Homeland Security Chief, Sharon Luce, incident commander for the Nevada Division of Emergency Management and Robert Pesapane, Deputy Federal Coordinating Officer for COVID-19 operations in Nevada, to overview the Get Out The Vaccine (GOTVax) efforts that have been taking place in Southern Nevada.
“Since July, teams have worked to canvass 21 zip codes in southern Nevada, they’ve supported more than 280 outreach and vaccination events and distributed more than 300,000 materials in the Las Vegas Valley,” Governor Sisolak said at Thursday’s press conference.
In early July, Nevada became one of the first states to take advantage of FEMA “surge teams” offered by the federal government to assist the State in COVID-19 vaccination efforts. These teams quickly identified zip codes in Southern Nevada with low rates of vaccination and high rates of infection as target neighborhoods. Leveraging partnerships with community organization – like Immunize Nevada and Mi Familia Vota, teams immediately got to work on direct and targeted outreach in those zip codes.
Over the course of the Get Out The Vaccine mission, there were more than 400 staff and volunteers from all over the country, as well as nearly 50 local hires from Clark County who contributed to the operation. This diverse staff with multi-lingual capabilities contributed to public acceptance, made an impact in vulnerable communities, and changed local perception and importantly, increased vaccination rates.
