Governor Sisolak provides public comment at WCSD, thanks staff for continued work
CARSON CITY -Today, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak called into the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees meeting to provide public comment and support for a safe reopening of schools.
The recording of the meeting can be found here and the Governor’s comment is below.
Governor’s remarks:
Good evening. Thank you to President Taylor, members of the Board, and Superintendent McNeill for including me in today’s meeting. I also want to take this opportunity to thank State Superintendent Jhone Ebert and the Nevada Department of Education for their work and coordination with WCSD during this challenging period.
In my State of the State address, I gave a shout-out to those who educate and support our young people, in childcare, higher education, and our K-12 schools. When our schools shifted from in-person learning to online learning last spring, our business community gained a new appreciation for the valuable role schools play in helping to keep our economy humming.
And I know countless parents who have a new appreciation for the patience, dedication, and generosity teachers show day in and day out after having listened in on their child’s virtual classroom.
I want to recognize the Washoe County School District board, Superintendent McNeill, and the school leaders, teachers, and staff across the county who put countless hours of planning and preparation into reopening school buildings safely last August.
We are proud of how the district has worked closely with families and students to design innovative hybrid learning models.
As the second largest district in our State, you have been a local and national model for how a community can come together to make tough decisions that are best for the health and safety of all of our students. We know that when our students have access to reliable support and caring adults, they feel safe and welcome to learn and can continue to grow.
Thank you for your continued leadership in providing the safest possible in-person education opportunities for your students.
I know that going into school buildings each day is not without its risks – risks shared by all of our essential workers and, indeed, any of us who need to leave our homes to support our families.
I want to say how grateful I am to the teachers and school staff in Washoe County who continue to go above and beyond the call in their commitment and care for Nevada’s children.
Our children are our greatest asset, and your investment in them is an investment in Nevada’s long-term success.
