Governor Sisolak meets with community advocates to discuss climate change
LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, Governor Sisolak hosted a roundtable discussion with community advocates to discuss climate change. Participants discussed the impacts of climate change, the economic opportunities of climate action, and potential next steps the state could take as part of the Governor’s Climate Initiative.
“Look no further than the low elevations at Lake Mead, record-setting heat waves, or the devastating wildfires across the West-- climate change is here on our doorstep and low-income and historically underserved communities are bearing the brunt of the impacts,” said Governor Sisolak. “We have taken some important steps here in the state to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and ensure resilience to the effects of a changing climate, but we need to do more. I am committed to ensuring my Administration takes further climate action.”
In 2019, Governor Sisolak committed Nevada to the U.S. Climate Alliance, a bipartisan group of U.S. States committed to the terms of the Paris Agreement, and signed legislation setting greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets for Nevada. The Governor also issued an executive order in late 2019, setting the stage for the Nevada Climate Initiative and for the state’s first comprehensive State Climate Strategy in 2020.
This was followed by activity throughout 2021 including the passage of an omnibus energy bill by the legislature, adoption of clean car regulations, and other climate-forward policies. Recently, the Governor appointed a Senior Climate Advisor to his office to ensure advancement of Nevada’s climate agenda across the state.
The most recent greenhouse gas emissions inventory issued by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection indicates that the state will fall short of the emissions reduction targets: falling 6% short of the 2025 28% reduction target, 21% short of the 2030 45% target, and well short of net-zero by 2050.
Today’s meeting marks the start of the next phase of climate action for Nevada. Members of the Nevada community are reminded they can submit their perspectives on climate change at https://gov.nv.gov/Forms/Share/ by selecting “Climate Change” from the “Issue” menu.
