Governor Sisolak signs groundbreaking legislation to expand voting access in Nevada, increase education funding

CARSON CITY, NV – Today, alongside State Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed groundbreaking legislation to expand voting access in the State of Nevada and increase education funding. The Governor will hold ceremonial mock signings for these two bills in the near future.

Assembly Bill 321, sponsored by Frierson and Assemblywoman Teresa Benitez Thompson, makes Nevada the sixth state to adopt a permanent vote-by mail-system. The bill requires all county and city clerks to send every active registered voter a mail ballot before a primary or general election.

“At a time when State legislatures across the country are attempting to roll back access to the polls, I am so proud that Nevada continues to push forward with proven strategies that make voting more accessible and secure,” said Sisolak. “Nevada has always been widely recognized as a leader in election administration and with this legislation, we will continue to build on that legacy.”

“I’m proud of the work we did to expand access to the ballot box for all eligible Nevadans. As John Lewis said, voting is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democracy, “ Speaker Frierson said. “While other states across the country move to make voting more restrictive, Nevada shines as a leader in protecting this fundamental sacred right. I’m honored to have played a part in expanding the freedom to vote in our beloved state.”

Additionally, Governor Sisolak signed Assembly Bill 495 into law today, which creates a significant and meaningful investment in education funding generated from the mining industry. The legislation was made possible through a partnership of education leaders, business and industry, a bipartisan group of legislators, stakeholders and community members.

“This investment will benefit every student, educator and family in Nevada and I am so proud of the collaborative effort undertaken by stakeholders to bring this legislation over the finish line,” Sisolak said. “With this legislation, we are well on our way toward creating a better Nevada for our educators, students and families.”
