Governor Sisolak issues Statement on CPUC decision identifying renewable energy resources in Southern Nevada
CARSON CITY, Nevada - Today, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak issued the following statement after the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) provided guidance on procuring more clean energy resources located in southern Nevada to help California meet its decarbonization goals while creating jobs and stimulating economic activity in Nevada.
“I applaud Governor Gavin Newsom, CPUC President Marybel Batjer, and the CPUC Commissioners for their ongoing commitment to fighting climate change. California’s recent action identifying additional renewable energy resources in southern Nevada to help it achieve its climate goals is a critical milestone in our regional approach to combating climate change.
Nevada has abundant solar, wind, and geothermal energy potential. Harnessing this power will benefit from important upgrades to the existing California Independent System Operator (CAISO) transmission system, leading to a modernized electric grid, offering improved reliability and resiliency.
This move will also encourage economic growth and create much needed, well-paying job opportunities in both states. It will lead to increased construction jobs, encourage additional renewable energy development, and strengthen our collective efforts to build our clean energy economy.
I thank the Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy for leading the effort under my administration to partner with neighboring states on clean energy, including their collaboration with the renewable energy industry in Nevada and the CPUC.
I also want to thank the Coalition of California Utility Employees (CUE), the Coalition for the Optimization of Renewable Development, and GridLiance for their efforts in advocating on behalf for additional renewable energy development in southern Nevada and urging regional solutions in addressing climate change.
We look forward to continuing this important work on regional climate solutions with Governor Newsom and discussing how we might continue to realize the potential of renewable energy resources in southern Nevada.
Working together, I am confident that Nevada and California will lead the nation in ensuring we achieve our ambitious climate and clean energy goals for a better future.”
Last week’s decision by the CPUC forwarded planning portfolios identifying a need for an additional 1,400 MW of solar resources in Nevada to CAISO to inform their transmission planning process. The resulting transmission build in the CAISO service territory of southern Nevada will unlock renewable energy development. This transmission development will deliver the CPUC identified solar resources as well as support future projects, all generating significant capital investment, tax revenue and jobs in southern Nevada. GOE, along with the other named parties above, participated in the CPUC process arguing for inclusion of the solar resources in the decision.
