Governor Sisolak celebrates Healthcare Week in Nevada, focusing on the supporting workers, increasing access to vulnerable populations and providing mental health support
NEVADA – Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak recently wrapped “Healthcare Week” in the Silver State, where he visited with frontline workers and toured businesses and organizations to talk about healthcare jobs and the economy, how the State is working to increase access for vulnerable populations and now the State is working to expand mental health supports over the course of three days
“I want to thank all the frontline workers and leaders across the State who took the time to meet with me this week to talk about our shared priority of strengthening our existing supports and resources when it comes to health care in Nevada,” said Governor Steve Sisolak. “Together, we’ve already done good work to support our health care economy, increase access to care and provide additional mental health supports and I look forward to continuing this important work in the future.”
The week began Tuesday with a visit to the home of Geoconda Hughes, a nurse practitioner in Las Vegas who has been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Governor also met with the Philippine Nurses Association of Nevada (PNANV); a non-profit professional organization dedicated to unifying Filipino nurses in Nevada. In addition to caring for patients, the organization has been spreading awareness about the importance of the COVID-19 vaccine and providing masks to those in need.
On Wednesday, the Governor toured the Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada location in Las Vegas which relies on volunteer services to care for Las Vegas Valley residents who other would otherwise have no access to care. He also toured the Martin Luther King Family Health Center, a Federally Qualified Healthcare Center to hear about ways to further increase access and care options.
In Reno on Thursday, the Governor focused on mental health resources, visiting Quest Counseling, a Nevada Certified Behavioral Health Center and touring Crisis Support Services, which serves as Nevada’s crisis intervention center. At Quest, the Governor heard from mental health experts about their experiences assisting Nevadans throughout the pandemic and how Nevada can continue to strengthen the supports available. Crisis Support Services of Nevada is one of the longest continuously operating crisis intervention centers in the country and is now one of only nine national call centers for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
The Governor and his team will use the information gathered during Healthcare Week to inform policies going forward.
