Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of former Florida Senate President Gwen Margolis
On Tuesday, June 9, 2020, former Florida Senate President Gwen Margolis passed away. Margolis was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1974 and was re-elected three times. She was subsequently elected to the Florida Senate in 1980, chairing many committees including Finance, Tax and Claims, and Appropriations. Margolis served as Senate President from 1990 until 1992 and was the first woman in the United States to serve as President of any Senate. Margolis served as Chairman of Miami-Dade County Commission and was re-elected to the Florida Senate in 2002. She has been honored by the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame and received many awards including “Legislator of the Year” from the Florida Chamber of Commerce.
To honor the memory of Gwen Margolis and her service to our state, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the Miami-Dade County Courthouse in Miami, Florida, the City Hall of Miami, Florida, and at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, immediately until sunset Wednesday, June 10, 2020.
