SITUATION UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 22

Daily Update:
  • In an open letter to faith leaders, Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D. expressed their gratitude for the faith community’s support throughout the pandemic response and asked for their help reaching North Carolinians who have not yet been vaccinated. Read more.
  • Advisors to the Food and Drug Administration announced Friday the Pfizer-BioNTech (COMIRNATY) COVID-19 booster shot is safe, effective and recommended for individuals who have been fully vaccinated for at least six months and are 65 years and older; at high risk of severe COVID-19; and, at high risk of occupational exposure. As a next step, the Pfizer-BioNTech booster shot must be reviewed and recommended by the CDC to further define these groups before it will be made available for use. Read more.
  • NCDHHS announced four new locations offering monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for treatment of COVID-19 managed by local organizations in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, bringing the number of sites in the state offering this therapy to more than 200. Read more.
  • We want to hear from you: Please take the NCDHHS Dashboard Survey.

COVID-19 Vaccinations:
  • A free COVID-19 vaccine is available to all who want it. Vaccination is open to everyone 12 and older.
  • Please contact a provider to find out if you need an appointment or to confirm the type of vaccine they are providing. The Pfizer vaccine is approved for people age 12 and older, while the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are approved for adults 18 and older. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two shots a set number of days apart. Johnson & Johnson is a one-dose vaccine. To find a provider closest to you, use our Find My Vaccine Provider online tool.
  • For more information on the COVID-19 vaccines, visit YourSpotYourShot.nc.gov or call the COVID-19 Vaccine Help Center for free at 1-888-675-4567.

COVID-19 Testing:
  • Anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19 should get tested. If you are sick, use the Check My Symptoms tool to help you determine if you need a COVID-19 test. People who are not vaccinated and do not have symptoms but may have been exposed to COVID-19 should also get tested, especially people from historically marginalized communities, including Latinx/Hispanic, Black/African American and American Indian Populations, who have been disproportionately affected by the virus.
  • If you have recently tested positive for COVID-19 and have had symptoms for 10 days or less, talk to your health care provider to see if monoclonal antibody therapy is an option for you or find a treatment center near you. Some people may qualify for preventative treatment before showing symptoms.  If you have been exposed to COVID-19, talk to your health care provider for more.
  • North Carolina has upcoming testing events scheduled in multiple counties throughout the state. For an up-to-date list of events, visit the Community Testing Events webpage. Many events offer testing at no cost. For more details about a specific event, call ahead before you go for a test.
  • North Carolina COVID-19 testing is also provided at some local health departments, doctor and clinician offices, hospitals and clinics, many pharmacy sites and retail outlets, and other community locations. Some people who work in long-term care facilities and other high-risk settings may be tested through their work. You can find testing sites by using the Find My Testing Place tool online.

ICYMI:
  • In response to actions taken by the Union County Board of Education, NCDHHS issued a letter to the Board’s Chair outlining required COVID-19 control measures all schools in the state must implement to protect student, staff and community health and noting that failure to comply may prompt legal action. Read more.
  • Healthier Together, a public-private partnership between NCDHHS and NC Counts Coalition, released the second round of funding of up to $500,000 for community-based organizations to apply for grants to help North Carolina achieve its goal of delivering equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. Read more.
  • Public health officials with NCDHHS urge North Carolinians to protect themselves, their families and those around them by getting vaccinated against Influenza as the state enters flu season while experiencing a surge of COVID-19 caused by the Delta variant. Read more.
