Congressional Policy Discussion on Energy Development, Supply Chain, Agriculture & National Security
Informative discussion examines how American energy development impacts agriculture, supply chain and enhances our nation’s security.
Williamsport, PA - Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation, the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce and the Wyoming County Chamber of Commerce hosted a Think About Energy Briefing webinar on Tuesday May 5, 2020.
Today’s webinar featured U.S. Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson (PA-15), U.S. Congressman Guy Reschenthaler (PA-14) and U.S. Congressman Fred Keller (PA-12).
The webinar provided attendees with important and timely updates on American energy development and its impacts on agriculture, our supply chain and enhancing our nation’s energy security as Pennsylvania’s economy looks to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.
George Stark, Director, External Affairs, Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation, moderated today’s discussion. “We are very grateful for the leadership of today’s guests on our behalf in Washington. Their insights on how Pennsylvania can best position itself to emerge from this pandemic – and the critical role energy development can play in its success – are extremely valuable,” Stark said.
U.S. Congressman “GT” Thompson (PA-15), a member of the House Committee on Agriculture, focused on the connection between agriculture and a strong energy industry.
“Energy plays a major role in the everyday lives of all Americans. As Pennsylvanians, this is especially true given the Commonwealth’s rich history of oil and gas production and its influence on the Commonwealth’s number one industry, agriculture,” Rep. Thompson said. “In order for agriculture to thrive and remain the economic engine of rural America, our nation’s farmers and ranchers must have continued access to reliable and affordable domestic energy. I’m pleased to join my friends, Representatives Fred Keller and Guy Reschenthaler along with so many energy advocates for this thoughtful discussion on these two critical industries.”
Representative Thompson touched on the responsibility of Congress as we emerge from the pandemic.
“If America is to maintain adequate oil and gas infrastructure, remain dominant as the world energy producer, and in short return to a robust economy supported by energy independence, Congress has to lead. Congress has passed several rounds of Cornovirus response to offer assistance to our economies and families as this pandemic continues,” said Rep. Thompson. “To me this is about saving lives, saving jobs and saving our economy.”
U.S. Congressman Guy Reschenthaler (PA-14), member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, discussed the potential opportunities oil and natural gas can play in recovering the economy from the pandemic. “As our nation begins to recover from this pandemic, maintaining a reliable and affordable supply of energy will be vital in helping the nation regain its footing and jumpstart our economy. Congress and the administration must ensure natural gas producers have the resources they need to withstand the current challenges,” Rep. Reschenthaler said. “As we look ahead to future relief and recovery measures, we must continue to stand up against Democrat calls to “ban fracking” or incorporate extreme Green New Deal policies. We should instead support proposals to strengthen our supply chains, enhance our national security, and provide more Americans with access to affordable natural gas.”
Representative Reschenthaler stressed that oil and gas production goes beyond the development of low cost energy.
“Natural gas production isn’t just about affordable energy. It’s also about the potential for jobs in industries like plastic manufacturing thanks to an abundant supply of petrochemicals. Right now, because of the high demand for PPE, hand sanitizer, and ventilators, we are seeing the importance of that supply chain and the economic opportunities petrochemical production can bring to Pennsylvania,” Rep. Reschenthaler said. “On both the state and federal level, we must look for ways to incentivize companies to invest in Pennsylvania.”
U.S. Congressman Fred Keller (PA-12), member of the House Energy Action Team, highlighted the important role domestic energy companies provide for the nation’s economy and communities. "Throughout Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District, natural gas companies like Cabot Oil & Gas have been terrific community partners, helping their neighbors while ensuring American energy production continues,” Rep. Keller said. “As Congress and the Trump Administration work to stop the influence of artificial foreign price manipulation of the American energy industry, we know these companies will remain poised to lead another great American comeback.”
Representative Keller went on to discuss the resiliency of the agricultural community during the global pandemic.
"Our agricultural community has also answered the call to continue keeping our food supply open and Americans fed despite the unique circumstances they face as a result of COVID-19,” Rep. Keller said. “We also must work to ensure critical supply chain issues dependent on an
untrustworthy Chinese government are brought back to America to ensure their continued viability in the event of another global pandemic.”
"Webinars like today's 'Think About Energy' event are an important tool to allow lawmakers to communicate on these topics of national importance, the great work we are seeing done on the ground during this unprecedented time, and how we can all work together to bring America back stronger than ever before,” concluded Rep. Keller.
