Issues / Questions
1) Suicide prevention:
- How, on the Federal level, can potential suicide victims be helped?
- Have you ever attended an Out of the Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention?
- Suicide is still pretty much a topic that is rarely discussed. Very rare to hear a candidate / politician mention it. Do you have any ideas / plans on making this a priority?
- What, in your opinion, are reasons a person would even remotely consider suicide?
- Have you even a victim / survivor of suicide / attempt?
2) Homeless (especially children living on the street):
- Is there any possible way to find out how many people are living on the street / homeless?
- Adults living on the street is bad enough. Children being homeless is almost unacceptable in this country.
These topics are rarely mentioned in the media. I never hear a candidate / politician talk about it. Unless pressured by people / media. Why do you think this is, to a point, a taboo subject?
- One main solution is to provide affordable housing for the homeless. Great idea, a few problems: They need jobs to continue paying for it. A certain percentage have just given up hope. Others? Drug and alcohol use. A small number prefer that life. Do you have any ideas / plans on how to help the people who want a better life?
- There are numerous reasons why an adult ends up living on the street. Can you provide a few, other than the
obvious (loss of job, drug / alcohol use examples)?
- What are some reasons children end up living on the streets in this country?
- What can our government and society do to reduce the risk of a child ending up on the streets?
- How much more vulnerable are children on the streets to predators (sexual / drug / abusers examples)?
- Do you or have you known / experienced life on the streets or someone living there?
3) Are states and localities attempting to gain too much power? Examples: abortion and sanctuary cities, towns, etc.
4) Violence: One of the many areas where there is not even close to an easy solution. Partly because this includes everything from random acts to pre-planned attacks on multiple levels. Plus, there are many sides / reasons / facets to the problem.
- How can we as a society and our government even begin to seriously address the issue of violence?
- Do you know someone or have you been the victim of a violent crime in any form?
- How, through education, can violence / violent crimes be reduced?
- What are other ways / methods, other than incarceration, of dealing with violent offenders?
5) Equality / Equal rights:
- Every person / group / demographic experiences prejudice / hate / discrimination at some point. Laws are almost constantly changing in attempts to eliminate this. Honestly, does equality for everyone even exist?
- Do you believe it is time to emphasize that we are people / human beings first? It could be stated we are rapidly moving towards a Divided States vs. United. How, as a society / government can we begin to honestly and truly work together?
6) Drug / controlled substance problem:
- Opioids / heroin are only part of the problem. We are seeing an increase in arrests and confiscations of all drugs. Other pieces include: meth, cocaine, crack and more, these you rarely hear about now. What are your ideas / plans for dealing with the entire problem, not just specific aspects?
- How can more resources be allocated towards prevention vs. reaction? Would a serious increase in prevention save time, money, lives long term?
- Have states overstepped their limits in legalizing marijuana?
- It almost appears marijuana to be the "Cure all" / no dangerous effects for this millennium. What are the real / honest facts about recreational use?
- Is there any real solution to the drug problem, especially with new ones being created?
7) Domestic Terrorism:
- Gangs, organized crime, domestic abusers, drug addicts, and more fall into this category. Would it be legal or possible to use our military as a more visible assistance to local and state law enforcement? By visible, I mean even having a presence in the cities / areas with highest crime rates.
8) Border security:
- A wall will only do so much on one side. Another solution would be to build military bases. Do you agree
with this statement? What are your ideas / plans?
- Do states have a right to withdraw any military presence?
9) Gun control:
- The strictest laws can only do so much. If you can not have a gun legally, the can be found for purchase on the streets. How can we drastically decrease the amount of guns circulating on the street level?
10) Environment:
- Are we past the point of no return? Or at least a reasonable short term version of it?
- Is is possible to go too far in the other direction? Examples: banning plastic straws / Styrofoam containers / etc.
11) Elections / campaigns:
- Politics in general, it appears, are becoming more of attack / defend vs. what is best for the United States. As a registered Independent voter, I am tired of this tactic / policy, especially in campaigns. Do you see any way to convince candidates / politicians to avoid this. Only stay with the facts / issues / problems?
- Some states have closed / semi-closed primary elections. Do you believe this is a form of voter suppression? Considering there is a growing number of 3rd party and Independent voters.
- The cost of campaigns continues to rise. There are ways candidates can offset this, example: social media. How do you plan to keep expenses as low as possible? Showing people you stand for financial responsibility.
12) Media:
- Yes, we do have Freedom of Speech / Press / Expression. Especially with Freedom of the Press, there is a very serious responsibility that goes with it. Is the media starting to forget that responsibility?
- Is the media crossing lines and, at times, abusing the right? Even to the point where they should face charges for slander / defamation and more.
