Republican party candidate
Due to the short time before the elections, I kept it right to the point. The interview is a straight copy / paste (unedited) from a Facebook conversation.
Interview
1) If elected, in general, how would you convince commissioners to pass or go along with your ideas and plans? Especially if there was strong opposition from one or two.
Brad: Success in elected office comes with good ideas, good communication, cooperation, and ultimately, execution. Building the foundation of trust with your colleagues is the key to opening the door to this success. And not all ideas have to come from the Executive!
2) Lanta bus is essential to the Lehigh Valley. Especially workers / senior citizens / students. How do you plan to support public transportation. Including promoting it as a viable option?
Brad: My top priority as Lehigh County Executive will be to develop an aggressive five-year plan with financial projections for growth in our county. We will evaluate every department and agency to see how we can improve and better serve our residents. As a large number of workers rely on LANTA service to get to-and-from work every day, seniors to grocery stores and appointments, and students to schools and after-school activities, public transportation will be a part of this plan. Also, I will appoint citizens to the LANTA board who have a shared interest in recognizing the value of public transportation in our community today.
3) Opioids are a serious problem. They are only part of a much bigger picture including: alcohol, meth, crack, etc. Do you have any ideas or plans to start addressing addiction in general? Treatment is essential. To truly begin solving the problem, it has to be addressed from the other side: causes.
Brad: Opioids and opioid addiction is ravaging our families, and resulting in an alarming number of deaths. We cannot arrest our way out of this crisis. Addressing the opioid crisis has been central to my platform throughout this campaign. I have met with our leaders in both political parties - including Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro - to examine the best ways to end this epidemic. As executive, I will bring together leaders and those on the front lines of this issue to help develop a strategic plan and focus resources to make sure we end this crisis in Lehigh County.
4) What is the role of county government? Does it influence the city, town, borough governments?
Brad: The fundamental role of county government is to provide support, resources and staffing for the Courts, Public Defender's and District Attorney's offices, the Sheriff, the Coroner, Controller and Clerk of Judicial Records, as well as the management of the county jail and Cedarbrook. Human Service needs are the largest part of the overall budget, though, amounting to approximately $300M. The county provides critical resources and funding for municipal planning through the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission, economic development through the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation, and communication and local problem-solving forums through the Congress of Governments. More can be done, though, with an active effort to bring family-sustaining jobs to our community - I plan on being a salesman and cheerleader for our county in attracting such opportunities.
