Black History Month
The selection of the historic Bethel Burying Ground Memorial
February represents an important milestone for the Bethel Burying Ground Historic Site Memorial Project. The Bethel Burying Ground Memorial will be a site-specific public art memorial that recognizes and celebrates the over 5,000 African Americans buried at the historic Bethel Burying Ground, located beneath Weccacoe Playground in Queen Village.
The Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy (OACCE) and the Bethel Burying Ground Historic Site Memorial Committee (Committee) invite you to participate in the selection of this public art memorial design by this Friday, February 5th.
The Bethel Burying Ground is inextricably linked to the history of Philadelphia’s free Black population and the individuals interred represent the founding generations of arguably the nation’s largest and most noteworthy African American population of the 18th and 19th centuries. Those buried in the Bethel Burying Ground are some of the architects of the Black suffrage movement, the desegregation of the city’s transit system, and the organized resistance to the ever-present oppression of African Americans. The public art memorial will honor these individuals and tell their stories that are vital to Philadelphia’s history. How to Participate: Philadelphians can visit creativephl.org to review the four videos on the Bethel Burying Ground public art memorial designs and provide input. OACCE has received over 750 community input forms to-date. The community input process will end on Friday, February 5th. The findings of this process will be shared with the Committee for consideration on the selection of the winning public art memorial design in February.
