ATHLETE OF THE DAY: SANDRA SÁNCHEZ (ESP) AND MIGUEL BECERRA (MEX)
On the busiest day of the eleventh edition of The World Games, with 32 medalling events, two additional awards were given out at TWG Plaza, representing the Athletes of the Day for Saturday. The recipients of the Athlete of the Day Awards are Karate champion Sandra Sánchez from Spain and archer Miguel Becerra from Mexico. Recipients of the Athlete of the Day Award will be celebrated with a certificate and a gift, courtesy of Protective Life, at TWG Plaza. Congratulations to both athletes!
TWG gold medallist Sandra Sánchez is no stranger to accolades, and today she added another award to her collection as Athlete of the Day. In yesterday’s Women’s Kata event, Sánchez competed in five bouts, besting steep competition to win the gold medal in finals with 27.92 points, her highest record of the day. Sánchez’s TWG gold medal will pair well with her Olympic karate gold medal from the 2020 Tokyo Games. When you see her on stage receiving her Athlete of the Day Award, it may be the last time she’s ever the pedestal, as she is retiring after these Games. Sánchez’s win is currently the only medal for Spain.
The second Athlete of the Day goes to Mexico’s Miguel Becerra, who earned gold in the Men’s Compound Archery final, narrowly beating out French archer Jean-Philippe Boulch by a single point. He accepted the medal with tears in his eyes, evidence of just how hard these athletes have worked for the opportunity to compete at The World Games. Becerra’s win represents Mexico’s first gold medal at the eleventh Games. He also competed in Team Compound Archery, where he and his partner, Andrea Becerra, were edged out by India in the bronze medal competition. It was a busy and emotional day for Becerra, and it is no surprise that he earned the Athlete of the Day Award for the second competition day.
Stay tuned to the newsletter to hear more about the future recipients of the Award. Most importantly, congratulations again to Sandra Sánchez and Miguel Becerra!
As The World Games Athlete of the Day, Sanchez and Becerra will receive The World Games Athlete of the Month diploma as well as a branded gift from the Official Sponsor of Athlete of the Day, Protective Life
