ALLENTOWN ROTARY AND READING
It is said that someone once asked the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle how much better off in life an educated person was to one who could not read. “As much” said he, “as the living are to the dead.”
Well it doesn’t take an Aristotle to know that reading is fundamental. And the Allentown Rotary Club could not agree more.
At its meeting on September 13th, Allentown Rotary Club heard from Allison Ludlow, Program Director of the Center for Career Pathways at Lehigh Carbon Community College. Ludlow filled members in on the establishment of The Allentown Rotary Adult Literacy Library.
The money donated by ARC will be spent on two large bookcases, books and special events. It will be located at the LCCC Donley Center on Hamilton Street in Allentown where nearly 1,000 individuals participate in language learning and literacy classes annually.
Ludlow pointed out that a lot of the students at the Literacy Center have children. “A lot of them ask questions,” she says, “like where are my mommy and daddy going?” when they go out for classes.
In order to help the youngsters, understand better and to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month, an event called Family Literacy Fun Night with Central Elementary School is being held on October 24, from 6-8 p.m. at the Lehigh County Government Center at 17 S. 7TH Street. There will be free books, games, crafts, food, prizes, and in general fun. This event is sponsored by our Rotary Club through its grants process.
